H1N1 Surveillance (BORN Ontario)
The Ontario Perinatal Surveillance System (OPSS) is working in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada to participate in a one-year initiative to collect data on three new variables related to H1N1 influenza and acute influenza-like illness during pregnancy, antiviral medication use during pregnancy and H1N1/seasonal influenza vaccination during pregnancy. The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) and OPSS are requesting your support to ensure full participation in this initiative so that the new H1N1 data variables are captured for every hospital birth and home birth in the province starting November 1st, 2009.

Introduction to BORN Ontario
BORN Ontario
Ontario is increasing its capacity to plan and deliver maternal-newborn services though the Better Outcomes Registry & Network Ontario (BORN Ontario - previously the Ontario Perinatal Surveillance System - OPSS).
With a vision of providing the knowledge needed for The best possible beginnings for lifelong health, the mission of BORN is to:
Create and maintain an authoritative and definitive source of accurate and timely information to monitor, evaluate and plan for the best possible beginnings to life-long health.
Provide scientific and technical leadership for Ontario’s maternal, child and youth health system.
Ensure value of a high performing maternal, child and youth health system through management, measurement and clear sight of performance and outcomes.
Design and support data collection systems and linkages for maternal, child and youth health care that spans the spectrum from normal to high acuity and rare conditions.
Translate data into information and knowledge for the maternal, child and youth health care system.
The five founding members of BORN (Ontario Maternal Multiple Marker Screening, Fetal Alert Network, Ontario Midwifery Program, Niday Perinatal Database and Ontario Newborn Screening) are integrating their data systems into one authoritative, accurate and timely maternal-child registry to form the comprehensive information system needed to realize BORN Ontario’s vision.
The information gathered will support the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MoHLTC), Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) and Public Health Units of Ontario in measuring maternal-child health status and outcomes, developing responsive health policies and improving evaluation and accountability. Hospitals and midwifery groups will leverage the information for planning, monitoring, performance management and quality improvement within their centres. Healthcare providers and patients will be supported as BORN helps ensure individuals have been offered all of the resources available to them across the maternal/newborn care continuum. Finally, BORN will contribute to hypothesis-generating research and innovation.
By providing high quality evidence for providers, policy makers and researchers in the province, BORN facilitates and improves the provision of health care to the maternal-fetal and child populations throughout the province.
